Materials: Small cups with nylon, cheesecloth, or other porous cloth cut to fit the tops of the cups, and rubber bands to attach these fabric lids to each cup. Odorous objects like common herbs (mint), plant flowers, redwood bark, dirt, foods (like stinky cheese, lemon, and peanut butter). You can also use clay or other dough scented with food extracts like peppermint, lemon, orange, and vanilla.
Activity: Show the objects to the child or list them out with pictures. Place each object in its own cup, then put on the fabric lid and attach it with a rubber band. Pass the covered cup to the child and ask him/her to identify the smell source.
