Explore this geologic and ecological paradise complete with views of San Andreas fault activity, a bog, and a well maintained backpacker’s camp atop a bluff.
- Attractions
- This lies close to San Andreas fault line, so there is much geological interest here.
- Across the street from Los Trancos, you can take the short geologic tour of Los Trancos (from its parking lot), then continue across to Monte Bello to get a glimpse of the fault and some evidence of earthquakes (look for two lengths of fence that are offset from each other in the woods).
- This park takes you from rolling grassy hills to pond/bog to shady wooded groves.
- Keep an eye out for snakes, lizards, mice, beetles, and plenty of bird life. Raccoons, coyotes, foxes, and other larger wildlife have also been spotted here.
- Wildflowers abound here in Spring.
- There is camping here at Black Mountain Backpacking Camp, though it is a steep 1.5 hike to get to it. For more information, see Maps and More Information below.
- There are panoramic views from Black Mountain.
- Mountain biking is allowed on most trails.
- Limitations
- Stay on the trail to avoid poison oak and ticks.
- The trail gets very muddy here in the Winter if it has rained heavily.
- This is a popular area for mountain bikers and the trails can be narrow – be wary.
- No dogs allowed.
- Access
This park is not handicapped accessible – the fire road below the main parking lot is wide and well graded, but access to it is from narrow trails or from an area of road with no or little parking.
